Orthographic Transcription
....................................................................................................................................
Orthographic transcription
is the common type of annotation generated when we convert
a collection of speech recordings into a speech corpus. A
speech corpus is a collected body of recordings of speech
and conversations of people from a region. Such a speech corpus
is created primarily to have a record of ‘how people
speak’ rather than ‘what people speak’.
The speech corpus consists of two main parts namely the phonemic
labelings and the orthographic transcription. The phonemic
labelings give a pronunciation guide for each word that was
spoken. The orthographic transcription is a verbatim conversion
of spoken matter into text together with all the repetitions,
pauses, false starts, slips, stutters etc. Such a speech corpus
is tremendously useful across many areas of research.
Computer scientists make use of the corpus
to develop and improve their speech synthesis and recognition
software. Acoustic properties of speech are found to have
an impact on individuals. This phenomenon is being investigated
by psychologists. Conversational dynamics research also employs
speech corpora to probe further into communication research.
From the above description, we can easily
conclude why orthographic transcription is different from
other forms of transcription services. Speech corpora consists
of spontaneous speech, whose orthographic transcription must
be created by specialized transcriptionists in a careful and
error free manner. We have unmatched credentials in this highly
specialized area of transcription, which our impressive array
of clients will vouch for.
Exclusively for orthographic transcriptions,
we have formulated a set of guidelines for our transcriptionists.
These are:
(1)Standard spelling conventions will be
followed strictly. By use of a spell checker, all words will
be corrected to their standard orthographic form. If an unlisted
word appears, it will be marked specially and used thus thereafter.
(2) To prevent any typographical errors
in form of grammatical errors or speech attributed wrongly,
we get the transcript checked again by a transcriptionist
other than the one who originally transcribed the audio.
(3) The rules(in the form of special symbols
for pauses, repetitions etc.) used to get the audio transcribed
will be few in number and simple to understand for anyone
who refers the transcripts.
We are aware of the tight financial
purse strings of research departments of companies as well
as universities involved in creation of speech corpora. Our
orthographic transcription services are cheaper than any other
general transcription service that you would opt for as we
outsource our orthographic transcription services. This is
done without any compromise on the quality of transcription.
Our service will help you cut your transcriptioning costs
by an incredible amount vis a vis any other transcription
service. Any other service that provides such a unique blend
of quality transcription work at throwaway prices is hard
to find.
